Unlimited Claude API? Rate Limits, Budgets and Billing

Claude API usage is metered and rate-limited. Understand token billing, account budgets and retries before choosing an API route over a subscription.

There is no unlimited Claude API entitlement. API billing differs from subscription allowances, but request and token rate limits, account balances, spend controls and model capacity still apply.

Read the official API rate-limit reference and pricing documentation. Check the settings for your actual organization rather than assuming another account’s tier applies.

Plan a bounded workload

  1. Confirm authorized accessUse your own approved account or an administrator-provided route.
  2. Measure a small taskRecord token usage, tool charges and retry cost.
  3. Set spend controlsUse account budgets and client run budgets; do not rely only on prompt instructions.
  4. Handle throttlingHonor Retry-After where provided, use bounded backoff and stop permanent authentication failures.
  5. Preserve completed workInspect diffs and tool results before rerunning a stopped task.

Compare options without promising infinity

A subscription offers an included allowance under its plan terms. An API route meters usage under its own limits. A local model uses your hardware and is not Claude running for free. A third-party gateway may add fees, authentication and throughput constraints. Choose based on measured work, privacy and budget.

FAQ

Can I run Claude forever if I keep paying?

No such guarantee follows from token billing. Rate limits, spend controls, availability and policy still apply.

Does Wuwei remove provider limits?

No. A separate client does not remove upstream billing or account restrictions.

Choose the workflow that fits your project and budget. A different client does not remove provider limits. Review [Wuwei pricing](/en/pricing) before using hosted models.
