Start with the model, not the proxy
Google's Gemini 3.8 Flash announcement confirms that the model is available through the Gemini API and Google AI Studio. Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber is a separate, access-restricted offering. Do not treat the two names as interchangeable.
Before configuring a client, confirm which Google API product you use, which model your account can access, and how that service authenticates requests. A Google Cloud setup is not automatically interchangeable with an AI Studio API-key setup.
What Claude Code officially supports
Anthropic's gateway documentation says it does not support routing Claude Code to non-Claude models through any gateway. That does not rule out third-party experiments, but it means you should not treat a Gemini adapter as an officially supported Claude Code integration.
This page does not provide a tested Gemini proxy recipe. Before following a third-party guide, look for a named gateway, a version number, a supported model ID and an example that completes a tool call, not just a chat reply.
Check the gateway settings before changing anything
- Save your current setup.Keep a copy of your existing settings and use a disposable project for the first test.
- Get the gateway address.ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL points to the gateway. It is not a general-purpose setting for any provider URL.
- Use the credential the gateway expects.Anthropic documents ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN for Bearer authentication and ANTHROPIC_API_KEY for x-api-key authentication. Do not assume either value should be your Google API key.
- Check the model mapping.A gateway may expose its own model alias. Match that alias to a real model available in your Google account.
- Test the agent workflow.Check a tool request, the tool result and the next response before allowing changes to an important project.

What you may pay for
Keep three costs separate: the client, model usage and any gateway service. Google's launch announcement includes time-limited introductory pricing, so check the current terms for the API you use rather than treating the launch price as permanent. A free client download does not include paid Gemini usage.
When a separate desktop app makes sense
If your goal is to keep Claude Code, downloading Wuwei is not a configuration step. Wuwei is a separate desktop application for working with local files. Consider it only if you are open to a different workflow, and confirm support for the exact provider, API and tool-calling features you need. This guide does not verify Gemini 3.8 Flash in Wuwei.
Before you install Wuwei
Open the official site on your computer and choose the installer for your operating system. On a Mac, check whether your machine uses Apple Silicon or Intel before downloading. If the page does not offer a matching build, stop rather than installing a package for another architecture.
Check Wuwei's pricing and hosted-service terms before choosing how to access models. With your own provider key, model usage is billed by that provider; hosted access follows Wuwei's current terms. Start with a non-sensitive test folder and review any permissions before allowing file changes or commands.

Is Gemini 3.8 Flash a real model?** Yes. Google has published an official launch announcement for Gemini 3.8 Flash. Account access and client compatibility are separate checks.
**Is Gemini in Claude Code officially supported?** No. Anthropic says it does not support routing Claude Code to non-Claude models through a gateway. A third-party adapter is not the same as official support.
Should I put my Google API key in ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN?** Not by default. That setting authenticates to the gateway. Use the credential and authentication method required by the gateway's documentation.
